As we have just entered the season of Autumn, I have been reflecting on what the "Autumn energy" means to us. From an eastern medicine point of view, elements in the environment, our bodies, nature, emotions etc. are related or connected. So there is a special significance between the seasons to various internal organs in our body, our emotions during this time and the energy that dominates this time. If we could understand what this mean, we could look to nature to learn about how to make the most of the season of Autumn, to nourish ourselves, get our bodies in the best shape possible and refresh our purpose and drive.

Coming from South Africa where the weather is pretty constant through the year, I love it in the UK where you can visibly see the changes around you, with the colours on the trees changing brilliantly, the scattering of leaves on the ground. The air is cooler and drier; and feels refreshing. I even have a special Autumn inspired wardrobe with brown, green, orange clothes -and hijabs to match of course!

Autumn is the season of the harvest, when we reap what we planted in the spring. The energy of this season, more than any other, supports our letting go of the waste, the old and stale in our lives, leaving us receptive to the pure and new, granting us a vision of who we really are and what we want. We can see it clearly from nature: Trees in autumn don't stubbornly hold onto their leaves because they might need them next year. Yet how many of us hold onto what we've created or gathered - those decayed leaves, that old negativity? How can we hope for a harvest next year unless we let go of the old and start afresh?

Forgiveness is about letting go, clearing the 'waste', and remember forgiveness not only applies to forgiving others, but also forgiving yourself.

Other things you could do make the most of the Autumn energy:

  • Organise your life - Make a grand to do list with rough deadlines, and then break up your tasks into categories such as business, personal, home. As you work to organize your life, try to focus on what you have accomplished rather than fretting about all the work that remains to be done

  • Walks in nature: Make sure you have some time to take a break and going out for some fresh air especially in the evening or later afternoon. It will do wonders for your mind and body.

  • Deep Breathing – the organ associated with autumn from a Chinese medicine point of view is the Lung – so deep breathing to "inspire" will help a lot to strengthen the lungs and still the mind giving you clarity for all the work you have ahead.

  • Seek complementary therapy – such as BodyTalk – which is natural and gentle using the body's own healing power - to help you with letting go of pent-up emotions not serving you, and clear your mind so you can tackle whatever lies ahead.

  • For many of us autumn is gloomy as it signals Winter is coming soon where we dread the short cold days. Yet if we were to pause and enjoy this brilliant season, we would realise there is so much we can benefit from this season to have an even better rest of year.
