5 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress at Work

Even if you love your job, any workplace can be stressful due to tight deadlines and long hours. Stress impacts on all aspects of your health, so it is crucial to react to the needs of your body and mind. This can be done in simple steps to gain a positive, stress-free attitude in the office.

Take regular breaks

Your desk is where you will likely spend most of your day so regular breaks, like having a drink, writing your to-do list or making a call away from your desk, are simple but effective. More importantly, take a proper lunch break by turning off your screen and eating in a communal area. Depending on the length of your break, you could go to a local café or restaurant with your colleagues.

Get some fresh air

Instead of reaching for a coffee, energise yourself by going outside. Whenever you feel the stress looming, stand outside of your office, go for a walk and take a deep breath. Fresh air not only provides your body with clean oxygen, it also allows your body to relax as it unknowingly works harder to get the energy it needs when breathing in indoor air. The more energised and active you feel, the more relaxed your mind will be.

Prioritise your workload

To avoid a stressful day, adopt the "save the best until last" mantra. Get your most gruelling tasks out of the way in the morning so you are more likely to enjoy the afternoon. Writing a realistic to-do list every morning will help you prioritise your workload and have a stress-free day; but remember to allocate time for breaks.

Practice mindfulness meditation

If you can't take breaks often, try a quick meditation session at your desk. Mindfulness at work can massively increase your productivity levels as well as energize you for a busy day. Even if you are no meditation expert, there is a huge choice of handy apps available for you to find suitable, office-friendly exercises.

Get the right work-life balance

You are less likely to feel stressed at work if you have spent the weekend socialising and relaxing away from a screen. Make time for yourself to enjoy your hobbies, have a lie-in and eat your favourite food. Most importantly, don't take your work home with you. Keep any tasks you need to do at the office, and if you can, turn off that work phone.

If you're interested in these tips for yourself, why not get your colleagues involved to boost morale in the office? Start weekly walks or a staff lunch out of the office to create a productive and stress-free environment for everyone.
